Tender and chewy homemade flour tortillas made from scratch with only 4 ingredients! You will never want to buy them at the store again!
Have you ever had a craving for tacos? Ok, dumb question. Let me try again. Have you ever had a craving for tacos had everything on hand except the critical component- the tortilla? Of course you have. Sure you could go low-carb. Save some calories. Make a taco salad. Blah blah blah. But that’s not as fun! And a taco is not a taco or fajita or enchilada unless you have that perfect vehicle- the shell.
Here’s the deal though. Not all tortillas are created equally. The ones in the store- ok, sure cheap- and convenient I get it. I do. However, I have to tell you once you have tasted a homemade tortilla, fresh out of the skillet, with perfectly charred bubbles of goodness, ready to be rolled up around your favorite fixings, you really will not want to rush to the store again.
So let me show you how easy these are. I would put some serious money on that you have all the ingredients in your pantry ready to go. You ready for this? All you need is…flour, salt, oil, and water. That’s it!
How To Make Homemade Flour Tortillas – Step by Step
First start by gathering your ingredients. All you need for this is: flour, salt, water, and olive oil
Just throw them all together in a bowl and let them get happy…
…and mix until a scraggly (that’s a word right?) dough comes together. There is something OH SO SASTISFYING about making your own dough.
Now here is where you have to throw in a little elbow grease. Take that dough and turn it out onto a floured surface and knead until it comes together into a beautiful ball of dough (aka- knead about 10-12 times).
Now you are ready to go. Let’s make some tortillas! This batch will make 8 decent sized tortillas. I prefer to use my handy dandy dough cutter for this job.
Now just take each small dough ball, and working one at a time, roll these out into a 7-inch circle. Ok I lied so maybe you need a little more elbow grease.
Now you can cook these in a non-stick skillet (be sure to use a little cooking spray) or my pan of choice-my cast iron.
Wait for some bubbles to form..
Flip…ahh look how pretty it is.
That’s it! Just keep rolling and cooking and before you know it you will have a whole stack of warm tender chewy tortillas that beats all store-bought versions.
Tips To Make Homemade Flour Tortillas
- Be sure to measure your flour correctly for the best tortillas. You can read a full tutorial on how to do that here.
- You can use other oils as well. Or try using a solid fat- lard, shortening or coconut oil. Just cut it into the flour before kneading.
- If the dough is tough to roll out, then let it rest it a few more minutes.
- If the tortillas are too crispy, then either lower the heat or cook less so you ensure you have tender tortillas.
- For homemade chips, cut tortillas into wedges and bake at 350 degrees until crisp . Add a touch of oil and seasonings of your choice like salt and chili powder.
How To Keep Tortillas Soft
While you are making these, keep them wrapped in a napkin to keep warm. You can also keep a damp paper towel between tortilla to keep them soft. Or place them in a zip-loc bag and sealed so the steam keeps the tortillas soft.
How To Store Homemade Flour Tortillas
They will stay good at room temperature for up to 12 hours. After this, it’s best to store them in an airtight container the refrigerator to keep them drying out.
If you have leftover tortillas, stack them with parchment paper in between each, then place them in a zip-loc bag and freeze. Then simply thaw at room temperature and reheat as directed below.
How To Reheat Flour Tortillas
In the microwave: I simply place my tortillas on a plate and microwave for 10-2o seconds (will vary depending on your microwave) until soft and pliable again.
In the oven: You can wrap the tortillas in aluminum foil and heat in a 350°F for 5-7 minutes.
And that’s it! How easy is that? Skip the grocery store lines and whip up your own homemade flour tortillas in no time.

I have never made my own tortillas, this needs to happen! I guess I always thought I needed a tortilla press to make them look nice, but yours look really thin and perfect just using a rolling pin. I will be trying these soon, thanks!
