Peanut butter, oreos, and chocolate is all you need to make these crazy delicious peanut butter oreo balls. No cream cheese is required! And I’ve made these a gluten free oreo ball version as well!
Ok I don’t know about you but I’ve been up to my elbows in pumpkin and apple recipes. I seriously need to start a fall baking only pinterest board. It would be filled, like yesterday.
But sometimes you just need to take a step back from all the pumpkins and apples. And dive into a jar of peanut butter and a package of Oreos. Why can’t there be an Oreo and Peanut Butter season. Oh wait. It’s called all year long.
These little chocolate covered bites of heaven require only three ingredients. And a little bit of patience. Ok and maybe a few sprinkles just for fun.
Tips On Making These Peanut Butter Oreo Balls
- Freeze Them First – I recommend freezing them first before dipping them in chocolate. At least 30 minutes to an hour. I actually froze mine overnight. But freezing helps when you dip them in the chocolate so they don’t fall apart o you. If you do leave them overnight, covering them would be best.
- I used a gluten free oreo cookie package which had 21 oreos in the package, if you use real Oreos, the package contains more cookies. You can count out 21, or simply use the whole package you just may need to add additional peanut butter to your taste and desired consistency.
- You could use candy dipping tools, but I found a fork and toothpick works fine if you don’t have them.
How To Make These Peanut Butter Oreo Balls – Step By Step
Don’t be intimidated by candy making. You just need a little bit of know how. You could use some candy making tools, but I have gotten by with a fork and a toothpick in a pinch.
For these truffles I used gluten free “oreo” cookies- gluten free or not- either will work just fine.
Throw in the cookies and the peanut butter into your food processor and blend away!
Until a smooth yummy consistency…
Then scoop and freeze. Yes freeze. My first attempt at trying to dip these into chocolate was a big chocolatey goopy oreo ball mess. Trust me freeze them.
Once frozen, you can shape them. I found before I froze them the dough was too sticky to shape. So save yourself the headache and shape them after they have shaped up.
Now it’s time to talk chocolate. YUM.
I used Ghirardelli chocolate melting wafers. I love these little wafers. They are a great quality chocolate and so easy to use.
You can simply melt these wafers in your microwave in 30-second intervals. Just make sure to stir in between 30-seconds. Before you know it, you will have a bowl of warm melty chocolate ready for dipping.
Just be sure your chocolate is warm enough and there is enough chocolate in your bowl. If your chocolate cools down or you begin to run low your truffles may turn out more like this…
Instead of this…
Just please whatever you don’t forget the SPRINKLES.
How To Dip These Gluten Free Peanut Butter Oreo Balls
Now if you don’t have candy making tools at home, you definitely can still make these. And make these pretty. Learning How To Dip Candy and Truffles can be quite tricky but don’t worry I got you!
- Make sure your chocolate is good and melted. I use my microwave but a chocolate melting pot also works. If your chocolate hardens as you are dipping, simply pop it back into the microwave for another 15 seconds.
- Start with frozen oreo balls.
- Use a fork to lower the oreo ball into the chocolate, or I love having a candy dipping tool to make this process go much faster.
- Give it a quick shake. I then give it a quick shake when I pick it up off the bowl to get the excess chocolate off.
- To slide it off the fork, I simply use a toothpick to help slide the truffle off the fork without messing the beautiful truffle up.
Then it’s time for sprinkles. Don’t forget your sprinkles. Oh, right I mentioned that already. Seriously, sprinkles make everything better.
Do Oreo Balls Need Refrigeration?
Typical oreo balls like these peppermint oreo balls for Christmas and Football Oreo balls I made for the Superbowl do because they contain cream cheese. These oreo balls though do not since they have peanut butter that binds the mixture together.
How Long Do Oreo Balls Stay Good For?
Well around my house. Not long at all! But you can keep them in the refrigerator for up to a month in an airtight container. And in the freezer, well covered for up to 4 months.
To Make These Peanut Butter Oreo Balls You Will Need:
- Cookie Sheet
- Parchment paper or silicone baking mat
- Food Processor (you could also mix these together in a stand mixer)
- 1-Inch Cookie Scoop
- Candy Dipping Tool (or you can get by with a fork)
These peanut butter oreo truffles were to. die. for. So if you’re looking for a break (just a mini one) from the pumpkin and apple train, these truffles will not disappoint.

3-ingredient peanut butter oreo truffles
Ingredients
- 1 cup peanut butter
- 21 oreo cookies
- 1 package of Ghiradelli melting wafers
- sprinkles optional
Instructions
- In your food processor combine your peanut butter and oreo cookies. Process until smooth. You may need to stop and use a spatula and scrape down the sides a few times.
- Prepare a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Using a 1-inch cookie scoop, scoop the cookie mixture into balls. Place them on your cookie sheet. They do not need to be spaced out at the moment. Place them in your freezer until frozen (I covered mine with plastic wrap and left them overnight).
- Once frozen shape the truffles into an even round shape by simply rolling them between your palms. Now prepare your chocolate wafers. Place the package of wafers into a microwave safe bowl and microwave in 30-second intervals. Be sure to stir between each interval. Once completely melted, you can now roll your truffles. Using a fork, lower your truffle into the mixture, coating it in chocolate. Place on your cookie sheet, sliding the truffle off the fork gently with a toothpick. Repeat with the remaining truffles, being sure to space them out. While the chocolate is still warm, sprinkle with sprinkles if you so choose!
