Hey there…welcome to my kitchen!
I am so happy you found my little corner of the internet. Let me properly introduce myself…
I’m Heather. I’m a teacher, doggie mama (and now new mama to a happy healthy little boy!) baker, photographer, and blogger. Believe it or not, I wasn’t always this passionate about baking. I actually grew up on a farm in upstate NY horseback riding and partaking in way too many barn chores. Sure I baked up chocolate chip cookies. Got a blue ribbon for my cornbread at the State Fair. But it wouldn’t be until some point in my early 20’s I discovered my love (dare say obsession?) of baking.
It was when I moved to Boston in 2009 and enrolled in recreational baking classes at Cambridge Culinary School that my love for baking really took off. And in 2011, I started Boston Girl Bakes in order to share my passion with the world. I knew that returning to culinary school was not an option. And I had been reading and following a bunch of food blogs. I loved the stories, the recipes, and of course the gorgeous photography. I wanted in on the action. So this blog was born.
Since then, I have had the privilege of working with some pretty cool national brands – Dove Chocolate, Quaker Oats, Reddi-Whip, International Delight…to name a few. I’ve even been featured in Country Living for these apple cider donuts!
As a self taught baker myself, I am hoping you find my blog as an inspiration and a resource to learn to bake from scratch with confidence. All of my recipes are made from scratch. I don’t believe in using a cake mix, or a tub of whipped topping. Maybe it’s the farm girl in me? With helpful tips, step by step photos, and some helpful baking 101 posts I am hoping my blog will give you the confidence to bake like a rock star.
If you are new to baking and want to learn more then you be sure to check out my Ultimate Baking Bootcamp online class I created.
I own about 100 cookbooks. Yes it’s true. Some may call it an obsession. I call it a passion. Some of the recipes on this blog may be from one of the many cookbooks – such as these Nutella Brownies – as I bake my way through them all. Some are original recipes like these funfetti cupcakes that I dreamt up in my kitchen.

FAQ’s:
What is your favorite thing to bake? That’s a tough one. But I’d have to say to bread! Have you tried my homemade bread recipe? It’s so easy and will disappear in your house quickly. I love that you are working with a live thing. It feels part magic, part science. And I feel like I can never stop learning something new when it comes to bread. Oh and eating it at the end ain’t too shabby either.
Do you take all of your own photos? I do! And it’s been quite a journey. I started by just using my phone camera. The photos have come a long way since then. I currently use a Canon 70D – with these three lenses – 50 mm/1.8, 35 mm, and my 60 mm macro. In fact I know offer food photography services. If you are a blogger, restaurant owner, or brand representative I would love to talk further with you! You can check out my food photography portfolio here.
How do you not weigh 300 pounds?! Trust me I eat my fair share of what I bake. I take that as true test I have a winner on my hands when I can’t stop myself from having a second (or third) serving. But for me it’s really about the process. Baking is a release for me. Oh and I also work out almost everyday to counteract all those calories eaten. It’s all about balance friend.

On your magic fluff fudge? My mom put the pan in a sink of cold water then stirred in the marshmallow fluff? Is there a difference in consistency of the fudge between the too ways?
Thank you in advance.
Heather says
Hi Julie, I’ve never tried this technique so can’t say for sure what the difference would be.
Susan says
What temp do you bake the pecan pie at?
Heather says
Hi Susan, pie should be baked at 375F

Hi Heather I just saw your recipe for honey butter, it sounds good, but when buying your honey look to see the country of origin. I’m sure that you have a farmers market or something similar.
I’m a hobbyist beekeeper, you really might be surprised with the different types and natural flavors you can get, just make sure its local and raw. There have been university studies that have found chemicals in some of the honey that comes from outside the USA that have been outlawed for very long times in the USA.
Buy local, know your Beekeeper.
Heather says
Hi Gary, thank you for the information. I’ll be sure to check it out! I’m always trying to keep as many chemicals out of my life as possible. And yes when I can I do try to buy local honey – I grew up with a local honey stand down the street but being here in a major city not always as easy so I try to stick to buying quality honey either my local farmer’s market, or from Whole Foods for at least better quality. Thank you for doing your part as a beekeeper, that’s amazing and hard work! I appreciate you!

Hello! I just wanted to say thank you for writing your cookbook “Beginner’s Baking Bible” . It’s exactly what I need, clear and easy to understand about the basics of baking. Thanks!
Heather says
aw thank you Kady! This comment just made my day! And I’m glad you found it so helpful 🙂

Help!! I made the brown sugar Buttercream. The flavor is amazing, but it’s “gritty”. What did I do wrong?
Heather says
Hi Lisa, the buttercream is going to be slightly gritty due to the brown sugar. Next time you could try grinding down your brown sugar first in your food processor if you want it less gritty.

Hi. I really like the look of your European buttercream frostings and would like to try one. I’ve read all about them but I can’t seem to find how much icing the recipes make, or will cover. I plan to try the Italian one for a 3 layer 10″ cake – Will it be enough?
Heather says
Hi Johanna! I’ll make sure to add that information in..but this should make about 4 – 4 1/2 cups. I would say since it’s 3 layers I would go with making 2 batches to be safe!

Hi,
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed. I am currently using Adele theme. I did built it myself, I switched over from using blogger not too long ago. I love the freedom that wordpress gives and its really easy to add in plugins like pinterest buttons and so forth. I used Bluehost to host my name. Hope that helps. Building a blog takes time, patience, and a lot of love. Enjoy 🙂
