When it comes to holidays, I can’t help myself and dressing up my desserts. And when it’s Halloween, dressing up is…well it’s the whole idea right?
Like last year, I couldn’t help myself and make these Halloween cupcakes. This year, I decided I was going to try my hand at something different. And I kept seeing spiderweb themed desserts all over Pinterest, so I figured why not a spiderweb cupcake right?
And oh my gosh, when they were done I was bit giddy. Yes desserts, especially make me giddy. Um, moving on…
I’m here to tell you if you think these are hard they aren’t. Just a few simple tools is all you need. So let’s get started.

The Materials Needed To Make These Spiderweb Cupcakes:
- Cupcake pans (I’ve been loving these non-stick ones lately)
- Greaseproof cupcake liners
- Kitchen-aid mixer (I stand by using one, to make the icing that much easier!)
- Dry measuring cups and measuring spoons
- My new favorite whisk (it’s a 2-in-1 whisk and bowl scraper!)
- Metal bowls (plastic tends to retain odors and can warp, metal is best)
- Black Food coloring– I use gel food coloring. My favorite brands are Wilton or Americolor.
- Candy Melts – You can use white chocolate for this but I prefer the candy melts for ease of melting and piping!
- Piping Bag or Bottle- I use a piping bag, but these squeeze bottles also will do the trick.
How To Make These Spiderweb Cupcakes
First let’s start with the easiest one bowl chocolate cupcake. I love this recipe from Hershey’s Kitchen. I mean what’s not to love about a moist, perfectly chocolatey cupcake that doesn’t even require you to take out your mixer? A whisk and one bowl? Um, yes please. Sign me up.

I made so many version of this chocolate cupcake over the years. Like peanut butter cup stuffed, or topped with cake batter frosting, Mint Oreo stuffed and topped with Bailey’s chocolate buttercream– the list goes on….
Ok then on to the buttercream. I’ve been on a bit of a buttercream kick lately. If you’re new to buttercream, then check out my Ultimate Guide on Making The Best Buttercream Icing. For this buttercream, I start with the (wait for it) the best buttercream icing recipe from Cook’s Illustrated. And then color it. Coloring your buttercream black can a bit tricky (yes Halloween pun intended), so be sure to read how to make black buttercream here.
Once your buttercream is colored, then it’s time to pipe and frost your cupcakes.
Ok now onto the fun part- the spiderweb decorations! I used this template for these spiderweb decorations from Candiquick. I simply printed off two copies and placed them on my cookie sheet and then placed wax paper (but parchment paper works too) on top. And then I filled a piping bag with white candy melts (be sure to secure the bag with a twist tie or a clean hair tie works too). Then microwave your candy melts directly in the bag in 30 second intervals until melted. Then be sure to snip off the end of your piping bag and begin to trace the pattern.
Then just allow them to cool before peeling them off the parchment paper and pop them on top of your cupcake! Don’t peel too early or you will have a bunch of broken pieces on your hand 🙁
