Hi there, I’m so glad you’re here! I’m Heather, the baker and author behind Boston Girl Bakes.
Here is my story…
Even though I reside just outside of Boston now, I actually grew up on a farm in rural, upstate New York. I grew up gardening, horseback riding, and was an active member in 4-H. But baking from scratch wasn’t exactly a thing in our household. Childhood birthday parties were fondly celebrated with a boxed cake mix and that tub of way too sweet, frosting. It’s safe to say I was not born with a baking gene!
It wouldn’t be actually until after college when I enrolled in a baking class for fun. It would be an understatement to say that I became obsessed with baking after that. I found myself in the kitchen baking up all sorts of delicious treats from scratch.
And even though I was busy starting my teaching career in Boston, it felt like something was missing. So I started this blog as a creative outlet to share my love of baking and recipes with the world.
And what started as a fun hobby on the weekends has grown into so much more! Since the start of the blog I am not a 3x published cookbook author! And I get to now work on this blog every single day sharing that passion with you!
Me With My #1 Taste Tester (aka my husband)
About Boston Girl Bakes
I’ve spent years in the kitchen learning how to bake from scratch. There has been lots of trial and lots of errors. But that is why I know you don’t need to have been born with the baking gene. You, too, can learn to bake from scratch.
My goal here at Boston Girl Bakes is to show you that baking doesn’t have to be difficult. You don’t need another recipe. What you need is the tips, and tricks, and well-tested recipes so you can become a baking rockstar in your own kitchen. Each recipe has been tested (multiple times!) by myself. I try to provide to you a detailed recipe with step by step photos and instructions so you can have 100% success.
My hope is that you return to Boston Girl Bakes again and again as a go to resource for delicious baked desserts and baking tips. So even if you’re a baking newbie and never picked up a spatula I want you to feel confident when baking up any recipe on my site.
Get To Know Me A Little More
- I’m a mom (both human and canine!). I had my son, Henry in 2022 and have so enjoyed watching him grow and spending time with him. I can’t wait until he is old enough to start baking with me!
- Married in 2021 (after having to postpone our wedding 3 times!!! thanks to covid) to the best man ever, dish washer, and taste tester. See photo above 🙂
- Yes I grew up on a farm and wouldn’t move to Boston until in my late 20’s. I still love returning home to visit my family and friends and enjoy the countryside.
- I hate red onions. Please don’t convince me they are delicious.
- My favorite dessert is probably chocolate lava cake. That or key lime pie.
- I teach middle school home economics. Yes middle school. But I do love teaching the young kids how to bake from scractch!
- Before teaching I waitressed in many restaurants to pay for school. It’s where my two dessert loves came from.
- My favorite thing to bake is probably anything with yeast! Like my cinnamon rolls.

9/16/23 I needed a way to use the extra grapes that have been in the refrigerator for a few weeks, and came across your recipe for Grape Quick Bread. It turned out great even though I forgot to quarter the grapes! The grapes remained suspended throughout the bread and slicing the bread with a serrated knife took care of slicing the grapes! I used half light brown sugar and half granulated sugar, and also finely grated a little bit of lemon peel into the batter. I would make this bread again. It was very similar to eating a berry bread. Thank you for sharing your recipe.
Heather says
aw you’re very welcome Jo! So glad you loved the bread!

On your magic fluff fudge? My mom put the pan in a sink of cold water then stirred in the marshmallow fluff? Is there a difference in consistency of the fudge between the too ways?
Thank you in advance.
Heather says
Hi Julie, I’ve never tried this technique so can’t say for sure what the difference would be.
Susan says
What temp do you bake the pecan pie at?
Heather says
Hi Susan, pie should be baked at 375F

Hi Heather I just saw your recipe for honey butter, it sounds good, but when buying your honey look to see the country of origin. I’m sure that you have a farmers market or something similar.
I’m a hobbyist beekeeper, you really might be surprised with the different types and natural flavors you can get, just make sure its local and raw. There have been university studies that have found chemicals in some of the honey that comes from outside the USA that have been outlawed for very long times in the USA.
Buy local, know your Beekeeper.
Heather says
Hi Gary, thank you for the information. I’ll be sure to check it out! I’m always trying to keep as many chemicals out of my life as possible. And yes when I can I do try to buy local honey – I grew up with a local honey stand down the street but being here in a major city not always as easy so I try to stick to buying quality honey either my local farmer’s market, or from Whole Foods for at least better quality. Thank you for doing your part as a beekeeper, that’s amazing and hard work! I appreciate you!

Hello! I just wanted to say thank you for writing your cookbook “Beginner’s Baking Bible” . It’s exactly what I need, clear and easy to understand about the basics of baking. Thanks!
Heather says
aw thank you Kady! This comment just made my day! And I’m glad you found it so helpful 🙂

Help!! I made the brown sugar Buttercream. The flavor is amazing, but it’s “gritty”. What did I do wrong?
Heather says
Hi Lisa, the buttercream is going to be slightly gritty due to the brown sugar. Next time you could try grinding down your brown sugar first in your food processor if you want it less gritty.

Hi. I really like the look of your European buttercream frostings and would like to try one. I’ve read all about them but I can’t seem to find how much icing the recipes make, or will cover. I plan to try the Italian one for a 3 layer 10″ cake – Will it be enough?
Heather says
Hi Johanna! I’ll make sure to add that information in..but this should make about 4 – 4 1/2 cups. I would say since it’s 3 layers I would go with making 2 batches to be safe!

Hi,
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed. I am currently using Adele theme. I did built it myself, I switched over from using blogger not too long ago. I love the freedom that wordpress gives and its really easy to add in plugins like pinterest buttons and so forth. I used Bluehost to host my name. Hope that helps. Building a blog takes time, patience, and a lot of love. Enjoy 🙂
