Cookie Monster Cookie Ingredients
- Sugar cookie mix – You can also make sugar cookies from scratch if you don’t want to use a sugar cookie mix.
- Egg – One room temperature egg to mix into the dough.
- Butter – You can use unsalted butter or salted butter for the cookies. You will use melted butter to make the cookie dough.
- Blue food coloring – I used blue gel food coloring and added a good amount. You can also use a liquid food coloring if needed, but it may take a lot of drops to get a deep blue color.
- White chocolate chips – For color and contrast in the cookie dough.
- Dark chocolate chips – Or semi sweet chocolate chips, but milk chocolate chips will also work.
- Oreo cookies – Chopped Oreos or other chocolate sandwich cookies to mix into the dough.
- Chocolate chip cookies – I used Chips ahoy cookies (regular or mini chips ahoy will work) but you can use any crunchy chocolate chip cookies, even mini chocolate chip cookies and crush these up and mixed these into the dough. You can use store-bought or homemade.
- Candy eyes – optional to press into cookies before baking.
How to Make Cookie Monster Cookies
Make cookie dough
Preheat the oven to 350oF (177oC) and line 2 large cookie sheets with parchment paper.
Mix the sugar cookie mix, egg, melted butter.
Add blue food coloring
And add blue food coloring in a large bowl until a thick, blue dough forms. Add more coloring, if needed, until the dough reaches your desired color.
Add white chocolate chips, chocolate chip cookies, crushed Oreos, and semi sweet chocolate chips
Fold in the white chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, crushed Oreos, and chocolate chip cookies using a wooden spoon or spatula.
I like to reserve some and have extra to place on top of the cookies before baking.
Stir the dough well so that the add-ins are evenly distributed throughout the dough. Use your clean hands to knead the dough a few times so that everything is well dispersed.
Scoop and bake cookie monster cookies
Using a 1 ½ inch cookie scoop, scoop out cookie dough balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
Add remaining white chocolate chips, Oreo cookie pieces and chocolate chip cookie pieces, and candy eyes if desired, and then bake for 7-11 minutes or until the cookies are set but still soft and the edges are just beginning to brown.
Allow to cool for at least 5 minutes before removing from the cookie sheet and placing on a cooling rack to cool completely.
Serve warm or cool completely and serve at room temperature.
Expert Tips
- Use blue gel food coloring. Gel adds less liquid to the cookie dough then liquid food coloring. So less liquid will mean your cookies will spread less. And it may be hard to achieve the blue color using liquid food coloring.
- Top cookies with more chips and crushed cookies before baking – This is what makes them so pretty for serving!
- Use parchment paper for easy removal – You can also use a silicone baking mat. I don’t recommend baking on a lightly greased cookie sheet or using tin foil as it can cause the cookies to spread.
Recipe Variations
- Change up the chocolate chips – I used white chocolate chips and dark chocolate chips but you can use any chips. Try using mini chips, milk chocolate chips, or even chopped chocolate bars, like milk chocolate bars.
- Make cookie monster cookies from scratch – You can make sugar cookies from scratch by mixing together 3 cups all purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, 1/4 teaspoon salt. And then cream together 2 sticks softened butter and 1/4 cups granulated sugar. Beat in 1 large egg and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Add in blue food coloring. Mix in flour mixture. Then stir in white chocolate chips, crushed chocolate chip cookies and chopped Oreos. Scoop cookies and bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-12 minutes.
- Stuff these cookie monster cookies – Scoop out two scoops of cookie dough and flatten them on top of one place a whole Oreo cookie, chocolate chip cookie, or bite-sized candy bar. Cover the stuffing with the other flattened dough and form a big ball, rolling it smooth before placing it on the prepared cookie sheet. Garnish as desired and then bake for 10-15 minutes or until the middles are set and the edges begin to brown. Allow the cookies to cool for 10 minutes before removing them from the pan.
Storage And Freezing Instructions
You can store these blue Cookie Monster Cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days.
If you want to keep these blue cookie monster cookies longer, you can freeze them for up to 2-3 months in a freezer-safe airtight container or plastic bag. When ready to eat them, thaw the cookies at room temperature or warm them in the microwave or oven. Please be aware that the Oreos and chocolate chip cookies may soften when stored, but the cookie monster cookies will still taste delicious.
