A homemade version of pumpkin pie spice to be used for all your pumpkin recipes! This DIY pumpkin pie spice recipe is easy to throw together and you can save a few dollars and a trip to the grocery store this holiday season!
So every Thanksgiving I am called upon to work my pie magic and whip up some pies. And of course, pumpkin pie is one of them. But of course, all those pies and all that baking requires some spices. But when I go home for the holidays to whip up these pies, I am relying on what’s in my mother’s kitchen. And my mother isn’t much of baker. And by that I mean she doesn’t do it. So having a jar of pumpkin pie spice on hand isn’t something I can rely on. However, I can rely on making my own.
And every good pumpkin recipe will call for “pumpkin pie spice” or a blend of the warm spices that make up pumpkin pie spice. Now you can definitely run out to the grocery store and pick up a jar of this stuff at a whopping $4.99 (at least it’s that much for me!).
Or you can whip your own version like I do every year. You probably even have all the spices on hand right now. It will save you tons of time in the future when making that next pumpkin recipe as opposed to getting out all those spices one by one again.
Ingredients For This Recipe
It’s important that your spices are still good before you put together your pumpkin pie spice blend. How can you tell? Use your nose. Give them each a good whiff. If they smell off or like nothing then it’s best to throw them out and get a new jar.
- Ground cinnamon
- Ground nutmeg
- Ground allspice
- Ground ginger
- Ground cloves
How To Make DIY Pumpkin Pie Spice
Making your pumpkin pie spice is as easy as measuring out your spices and stirring them together. Then just simply place them in an airtight container and you have your own pumpkin pie spice at the ready when you need it.
And so this recipe is simple and customizable. You can definitely add more or less of any spice according to what your nose tells you.
Make sure to give each spice a good whiff so you know just what each smells like before you combine them all to see if you want to add more (or maybe less!). When you sniff the whole mixture, you can then always decide if you want to add more of any particular spice in the end. Make it your own!
Recipe Tips
- Use new spices. This will ensure your spice blend lasts as long as possible.
- Give them a sniff. If your spices are not new, then give them a sniff to make sure they are still good. Remember no smell, or an off smell means it’s time to throw it out.
- Put in an airtight container. This will make sure they stay fresh as long as possible.
- Store in a cool, dry place. Again this helps with freshness.
- Allspice is it’s own thing. It’s not a blend of spices, it’s actually comes from a berry. So make sure to get a jar of actual allspice to make the homemade pumpkin pie spice.
- Adjust the amount. This recipe makes about 5 tablespoons, so you can double, triple, or half it if need be.
- Adjust the ratios. You can always adjust the amounts of spice to your liking.
How To Use Pumpkin Pie Spice
If a recipe calls for pumpkin pie spice, then go ahead and use your homemade version for a 1:1 substitute. If a recipe calls for these similar spices, then add up the total amount of spices called for and replace with equal amount of your pumpkin pie spice.
For example in my Pumpkin Muffin recipe, you would replace the spices in the recipe with 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice.
You can also use pumpkin pie spice in more than just pumpkin pie! I love stirring some into my morning oatmeal, or into my coffee. I love sprinkling some on my coffee grounds before it brews, so it’s pumpkin flavored coffee! You could stir some into whipped cream for a whole new experience, even stir into your yogurt! The pumpkin possibilities are endless!
Storage Instructions
You can keep your homemade pumpkin pie spice for up to 3 years, as long as it’s in an airtight container and the spices you used were fresh. If they were open already when you made your blend, then expect your diy spice to last a little less. Remember you can always give it a sniff to check!
