There’s just something magical about a warm, gooey cinnamon roll covered in a thick layer of tangy, creamy frosting isn’t there? Now I love making my cinnamon roll icing that’s made without cream cheese when I want something super quick. But this frosting is worth the extra minute.

This cream cheese frosting for cinnamon rolls is rich, silky, and perfectly balanced — not too sweet, with just the right touch of tang from the cream cheese. It melts beautifully over freshly baked my cinnamon roll recipe, seeping into all those cinnamon-sugar swirls for the ultimate finishing touch.

I’ve made a lot of cinnamon rolls over the years (and eaten my fair share too!), and this frosting is my go-to every single time. Whether you’re making them for a holiday brunch, weekend breakfast, or just because, this is the frosting that takes them from great to irresistible.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Cream cheese – Use full-fat cream cheese and block style (not the tub variety) for the best texture. And make sure it’s softened. Here is my tutorial on how to soften cream cheese quickly.
  • Unsalted butter – Salted butter also works. Make sure it’s at room temperature.
  • Powdered sugar – Or confectioners sugar. If you run out try my homemade powdered sugar version.
  • Vanilla extract

How to Make Cream Cheese Frosting for Cinnamon Rolls

Beat the cream cheese and butter – In a mixing bowl, beat softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth and fluffy.

This step is key for that light, spreadable texture. You can use a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment or a hand mixer.

Add powdered sugar and vanilla – Mix in powdered sugar (a 1/2 cup at a time) and beat on low speed.

You want to add a little at a time so you don’t end up with powdered sugar all over your kitchen. Then add in the vanilla extract. Beat until smooth and creamy.

Adjust consistency – If you prefer a pourable glaze, add a splash of milk or heavy cream until it reaches your desired consistency. For thicker frosting, skip it!

Frost while warm – Spread (or drizzle) the frosting over warm cinnamon rolls so it melts slightly into all those cinnamon swirls.

If you want a thicker layer that stays fluffy on top, wait until your cinnamon rolls have cooled for about 10–15 minutes before spreading the frosting. If you love it gooey and melty (like I do!), frost them while they’re still warm from the oven.

Variations to Try

  • Maple Cream Cheese Frosting: Add 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup for cozy fall flavor.
  • Brown Butter Frosting: Swap the butter for browned butter to give the frosting a nutty twist.
  • Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting: Add ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon to the mix for extra spice.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces cream cheese softened to room temperature
  • 4 tablespoons (57 g) unsalted butter softened
  • 2 cups (170 g) confectioners sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Beat cream cheese and butter. In a large mixing bowl with a hand mixer, or in the bowl of your stand mixer with a paddle attachment, beat the cream cheese and butter together on medium-high speed, for about 2 minutes until smooth and combined. 4 ounces cream cheese 4 tablespoons (57 g) unsalted butter
  • Add sugar. Add in the powdered sugar, about a ½ cup at a time and mix on low speed until combined. 2 cups (170 g) confectioners sugar
  • Add vanilla. Then beat in vanilla extract until combined. Beat on medium-high speed for about an extra 1-2 minutes until fluffy and light in texture. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ice rolls. Spread the cinnamon rolls with the cream cheese icing. I like to ice the rolls while they are still slightly warm so the icing melts on top of the rolls a bit.

Notes

  • Storage: Can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days. If you make it ahead of time, you may need to re-whip it again and let it soften a bit before using.
