Spices are I am sure you know are NOT CHEAP. And some spices though to me are such a waste since you don’t use much and usually worth a pretty penny- like apple pie spice.

This year I figure it would be much easier if I just made my own.

This apple pie spice. Let’s talk more about that…

What’s The Difference Between Pumpkin and Apple Pie Spice?

Cinnamon makes up most of both mixtures, but apple pie spice contains cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Pumpkin pie spice has cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves.

Can You Use Apple Pie Spice Instead Of Pumpkin Pie Spice?

Apple pie spice does differ somewhat but you can use them interchangeably if in a pinch!

How To Make Apple Pie Spice

To make your own apple pie spice you are going to need a few basic spices that I bet you have on hand:

  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • allspice
  • cloves or ginger
  • optional: cardamom

All you need to do is mix these together to make your own batch.  Homemade apple pie spice is so easy to make at home, it’ll make you wonder why you haven’t always made a batch yourself. It’s great to have on hand whenever you are in the apple mood. You can of course throw  it into whatever apple treat you are whipping up.

You can double, triple, quadruple the batch if you feel like.

What Can Be Used In Place Of Apple Pie Spice?

If a recipe does call for a apple pie spice and you don’t feel like whipping up an entire batch. Just make this substitution- for every teaspoon:

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 ground allspice

What Can I Use In Place Of Allspice?

If you don’t have allspice, don’t fret! You can make your own. For every teaspoon just combine: 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon cloves, and a pinch of nutmeg

You can use to use to make your own apple pie. Or maybe in an apple walnut crostata.

In the end it saves you time and money. Pretty sure those are two things we all want more of? Am I right?

This post is just making me want to bake up some apple treats. I’m curious what do you use apple pie spice in?
