60+ home baking projects to try

Social distancing. A term that up until a week ago had zero meaning in my life. Now it seems you can’t go five minutes without hearing about it, talking about it, reading about it, and (worst of all) worrying about it!

Right now I am (like many, many others) are at home. Now normally I would be at school teaching middle schoolers how to bake. But that’s not my new norm. Instead I am at home. And being at home has given me some more time on my hands. Time to dig into some new baking projects to try. And based on my scrolling through Instagram (you are all doing this more too right now right?) I am not alone.

There seems to be a resurgence in home baking. People are in their kitchens making homemade bread because there were none on the shelves. They are baking with their kids because “homeschooling” is now just everyday life. And people are trying out new recipes because they are bored, stuck at home, and want to try something new.

Frankly, I believe, there has never been a better time to enjoy baking at home. Baking has always been my therapy. My “me time” on the weekends to try and learn something new. And I can see that I am not alone.

So if you fall into one of those camps I thought I’d round up some recipes that would be a fun home baking project. I broke the recipes down into categories – beginner, quick and easy, challenging (advanced), no bake, baking with kids, yeast bread, buttercream decorating, no flour (no problem).

One last thing – I hope wherever you are you and your loved ones are safe, healthy, and have plenty of flour (and toilet paper).

Baking With Kids

Of course when baking with kids, it’s great to start simple and work on the basics of measuring and stirring. You can always divide up the recipe steps and have them read the steps out loud.

Baking is a great way to understand math and science! As a science teacher turned home economics teacher I love working in mini-lessons on math and science during our baking recipes.

I also find that kids are more likely to eat whole grains when they are part of the baking process. You can also stir in some extra fruits as well into these baked treats!

Here are some recipes I make with my students, plus a few other easy recipes that can be made in one bowl, or just require a whisk so they are easy to mix up.

Yeast Bread Recipes

There is something magical about making bread. It’s like part science. Part art. Part Harry Potter has gone to Hogwarts kind of magic going on in your kitchen. And right now being able to bake up my own homemade bread is a life saver.

Shelves are BARE. No bread anywhere. Except in my own kitchen. Thank you very much small packet of yeast.
